Mexican female artist Leticia Gravitania works in sculpture, installation art, surreal painting, and stage photography

Leticia was born in Mexico City, where she lived for the first half of her life. There, she saw prehispanic cultures, European influence, and the contemporary world come together to create a unique culture that makes the strange seem normal. The magical and macabre of that experience never left her and now plays a significant role in her work which uses fantastic realism to create narratives.

Mexico is a place that surrounds people with beautiful handmade objects and troubling social issues. The combination of the two, in addition to Leticia’s first job working for a puppet company, later sparked a multidisciplinary art practice that uses characters and metaphors to confront us with personal and collective challenges.

Her first body of work came to life in San Francisco while she was studying photography to become a war photographer. The internet was just beginning, and the world depended on images to communicate important world events. At that point, communicating through images moved into Leticia's work, which began transmitting feelings and expressing concerns through staged photographs of small dioramas and life-size sets.

During her invaluable experience at the San Francisco Art Institute, where she acquired an MFA, her work grew in scale, integrating sculptures and installations. At SFAI, Leticia's practice became informed by history and the work of old masters, particularly Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

Old masters created grand fictional stories and represented their social moments with genius. Leticia’s latest work in oil painting continues to explore social issues and ecological consequences through contemporary images inspired by Baroque and Renaissance art.
